We’ve all been there: a 4-day city trip is on the horizon, the flight is booked, but you find yourself staring at an open suitcase an hour before you need to leave for the airport. Packing for a long weekend is a delicate balancing act.
You want to look good for that rooftop bar, stay comfortable during a 20,000-step day of exploring, and still avoid the nightmare of checking a bag.
Through my own travels and a fair share of over-packing mistakes, I’ve refined a minimalist yet complete system for the modern man. Whether you’re heading out for a romantic weekend getaway or a quick solo photography mission, here is the ultimate men’s packing list for a 4-day city trip.
The 5-4-3-2-1 packing method
If you struggle with “just in case” syndrome, the 5-4-3-2-1 method is your new best friend. It’s a minimalist framework that ensures you have variety without the bulk. For a 4-day trip, we can adapt it slightly to keep you within carry-on limits:
- 5 sets of socks and underwear (always pack +1 for emergencies)
- 4 tops (T-shirts, polos, or a light button-down)
- 3 accessories (A hat, a watch, a pair of sunglasses, …)
- 2 bottoms (Jeans, chinos, or shorts).
- 1 pair of shoes (on your feet).
Men’s clothing: The 4-day essentials
The goal is versatility. You want pieces that you can mix and match so that every top works with every bottom. These numbers exclude what you are wearing on the plane.
- 4 pieces of underwear
- 4 pairs of socks: Don’t underestimate the power of a good pair of walking socks.
- 4 T-shirts: Neutral colors (white, navy, grey) are the easiest to style.
- 1 long-sleeve shirt: For a nice dinner or a surprise date.
- 1 extra pair of pants: If you wear jeans on the plane, pack a pair of chinos or tech-pants.
- 1 lightweight sweater or hoodie: Even in summer, evenings can get chilly, or the plane’s AC can be freezing.
- Extra pair of shoes: Wear your bulkiest shoes (boots or sneakers) and pack a lighter, flatter pair.
- Laundry bag: I usually just toss in an old T-shirt to keep the “dirties” separate from the clean clothes.
Seasonal adjustments
- For summer: Swap a pair of pants for linen shorts and pack your swimming trunks.
- For winter: Layers are your best friend. Pack a high-quality beanie, gloves, and a scarf. Instead of a bulky coat in the bag, wear your heaviest jacket during transit.
The business trip pivot
If those four days are a “workation” or a mid-week business trip, the list needs a slight upgrade. The key is to look professional without looking like you’re carrying a wardrobe.
- Swap the hoodie for a blazer: it’s the easiest way to dress up a T-shirt or a shirt.
- Wrinkle-free fabrics: Look for “non-iron” shirts or performance fabrics.
- Travel Steamer: If you have space, a tiny travel steamer is a lifesaver, though most hotels/Airbnbs have an iron.
Men’s toiletries: keep it clean
Keeping your kit compact is vital for TSA/security compliance.
- Toothbrush & paste
- Deodorant: Stick or roll-on to save on your liquid allowance.
- Shampoo: I usually go without, though
- Shaving supplies: A small safety razor or a compact electric trimmer.
- Moisturizer & sunscreen: City walking involves a lot of sun exposure; don’t skip the SPF.
- Hair wax/gel: Transfer a small amount into a travel-sized tin.
- First-aid basics: A few Ibuprofen and some Compeed/bandages for the inevitable blisters.
Tech & photography gear
As a photographer, this is the section I care about most. However, for a 4-day trip, “less is more” usually leads to better photos because you aren’t weighed down.
- Smartphone + charger: The ultimate travel tool.
- Power Bank: Essential for long days using Google Maps and taking photos.
- Camera: I usually stick to one body and one prime lens (like a 28mm).
- Memory cards: Two is one, and one is none. Always bring a spare.
- Universal Adapter: If you’re traveling intercontinental, this is the first thing in the bag.
- Noise-canceling headphones and a book: For the flight or the train ride.
- A laptop and a card reader: to edit the photos of the day during the evening.
Packing hacks for the 4-day carry-on
The biggest mistake people make is “stuffing” their bag. Instead:
- Use packing cubes: I’ve written about this before, but they truly change the game. They compress your clothes and keep your bag organized.
- The “Wear Your Heavy Stuff” Rule: Always wear your heaviest jacket, your boots, and your sweater on the plane. It frees up a massive amount of volume in your carry-on.
- Roll, Don’t Fold: Rolling your clothes reduces wrinkles and saves space.
- Maximize the “Personal Item”: Most airlines allow a small backpack in addition to your suitcase. Use it for your tech and camera gear so your suitcase is strictly for clothes and toiletries.
- If you go with friends, lots of things, like toothpaste and other items, can be shared. There’s no need to each bring your own.
Miscellaneous essentials
- Passport/ID: Check the expiration date before you book!
- A reusable water bottle: Most European cities have great tap water; save the plastic.
- A small notebook and pen: For those moments of inspiration when the phone feels too distracting.
- Digital copies: Have a photo of your passport and travel insurance on your phone/cloud.
Whether you’re staying in a hostel, an Airbnb, or a high-end hotel, this list ensures you have everything you need to enjoy the city without the stress of a heavy bag. Focus on the experience, capture the light, and enjoy the trip.
